What has the price of wood used in a Steinway been during the last 100 years?
editor @ 9:15 pm
Hi Mark, I don't have any data about Steinway's lumber, or lumber prices from 100 years ago. My lumber futures data starts in late 1972, and shows an all-time high of 73.5 grams in February of 1973. There were peaks around 50 grams in 1976 and 1977, and again in 1999. After that, prices worked their way down to an all-time low of 3.6 grams in August of 2011, then started rising. This run peaked in May of 2018 at 15.4 grams, then fell to a low of 5.1 grams in April of 2020. Since then, prices have climbed rapidly to day's price of 22.7 grams. The average price since 1972 is 19.4 grams.
