As I prepare to stroke a $30,000 semester tuition and board check to NYU I came across this blog again. Sadly, things have not changed in the world of education but I'm hopeful that the broader community has begin to see the inflation embedded in quantitave easing and stimuli. I think th elast election was really about that and nothing else.

Maybe we should just start paying for college in Big Macs themselves? I can't believe how expensive it is becoming to go to school lately. And every year it seems like tuition raises!

I agree! I suspect that you are getting a lot more, in quality and breadth of education, facilities, and certainly a much higher standard of living for room and board, for the same price!

Great metric, but I would argue that you also need to do an hedonic adjustment to the tuition because of the vastly more complex and broader curricula and capital needs in the sciences. Holding capital and faculty size and relative faculty salaries constant, the cost has probably dropped dramatically in the 109 year history. Remember, when colleges began in the U.S. in the 17th and 18th centuries they were basically divinity schools with a narrow curriculum and narrower minds.
